What are the Coastal Dune Lakes?

Walton County, located along a 26-mile stretch of coastline, is home to 15 unique coastal dune lakes, a geological feature in limited locations globally. These lakes have an intermittent connection with the Gulf of Mexico and are fed by various water sources like streams, groundwater seepage, rain, and storm surge. Each lake has a different outfall connection to the Gulf, leading to varying water conditions ranging from fresh to saline. Coastal dune lakes, some as old as 10,000 years, create a rare brackish ecosystem supporting both fresh and saltwater species. The lakes’ proximity to the Gulf, separated by a natural sand berm, allows for water exchange during events known as “outfalls.” Due to their unique ecosystem, the lakes appear different from the turquoise Gulf waters and are abundant in nutrients, attracting diverse wildlife. Activities such as fishing, hiking, boating, and paddleboarding are popular around these lakes. Access to South Walton’s coastal dune lakes is facilitated through state parks like Grayton Beach State Park and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. The Boathouse Paddle Club in WaterColor offers a perfect setting for exploring Western Lake, one of the most popular coastal dune lakes in the area.

Where are Coastal Dune Lakes?

Only 5 places in the world have coastal dune lakes, and only 2 places in the United States. Other places with these unique lakes include Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, and Oregon.
